In the second episode of “Around the Block,” we sat down with the Nickley Group’s very own, Alexis Nickley! Here’s a recap of Alexis’ best habits for real estate agents to develop early on in their career:

Consistency and Focusing on New Business Development

Who can I talk to today? Who should I speak with who’s considering buying a home, whether it’s today or a year from now? The key is to constantly add to your pipeline. That’s where consistency comes in. Like I said, it doesn’t matter what your pillars are, be it open houses, internet leads, or a sphere of influence. If you’re not focused on this every day, you won’t see the consistent business growth you’re aiming for.

Have a Positive Mindset

Your mindset is the most important thing. Coming in every single day with a positive mindset, but also realizing that, you know, this isn’t a decision that people make overnight.” – Alexis Nickley

Remember, after you get something under contract, it’s crucial to keep focusing on new business development, even as you manage the current deal. Often, agents—especially newer ones—lose focus after securing a contract. They’re so excited and have worked so hard to land that first deal that they stop doing what got them there in the first place. The key is to maintain a balance. It’s okay if you don’t set up a home search for a client this minute; you can still reach out to new people. By doing so, you’ll keep moving your business forward while also managing your current commitments.

Practice and Roleplay

At TNG, we prepare for our daily call blocks by role-playing different scenarios over the phone. Understanding that people have unique circumstances is essential. Some are eager to make a purchase right away, while others may need a year to get there. Still, you’ll likely be in this business a year from now, so those future clients matter too. Building relationships now—even with those who aren’t quite ready—lays the groundwork for future business. Practicing this way also helps us get better at handling objections, an inevitable part of real estate. It’s crucial to remember that for the person on the other end of the line, you’re an unfamiliar voice. If within the first few minutes you can’t establish that you’re neither a robot nor a telemarketer, you risk losing their interest. Fine-tuning these conversational skills is key! Without them, you won’t have the chance to turn a call into a meaningful connection, much less a sale.
Alexis’ suggestion: Network and roleplay with those in your office so that you can receive feedback!

Be Intentional

In the early stages of a real estate career, being intentional is not just beneficial—it’s vital. A proactive approach ensures you’re not just reacting to the market or clients but steering your career in the direction you want it to go. Take some time to consider a short list of things that are crucial to your ideal work environment. Do you want to be surrounded by like-minded individuals? Are you looking for extensive training that sets you up for success? Additionally, ask yourself: What actions are you taking to be better more than 50% of the time?”
