The Cameo’s History
The Cameo Theatre was built in 1939 as the first neighborhood theatre in Orlando and the fifth motion picture house in the greater Orlando area. After a year of operation, the theatre shut down, and many businesses, including IBM, occupied the building. Jorge Boone bought the Cameo in 2008; the building had a lot of graffiti and broken windows.
In an effort to restore the building to its original look, theOrlando Sentinelreleased an article asking for help finding pictures and information on the original look of the building. Luckily, a reader was able to find the Cameo Theatre’s grand opening press release from November 27, 1940. This release has the only known photo of the original building. With this photo, the city gave a 50/50 grant to help bring back the history and facade of the building. The renovation was completed in 2015.
In 2020 The Nickley Group (TNG) became the newest Cameo resident. TNG Owner, Tom Nickley, made sure this became a working office while keeping the historical nature of the building. A key feature of the interior is the exposed brick and white plaster where the old theatre seats used to be.
The Cameo Building is located in the Mills 50 district of Orlando. Our Director of Growth, Jeff Wernsing, describes the area best, “Mills 50 is just the heart of Orlando, it’s such a great community, it’s dynamic, and it matches perfectly with the culture of the team.” From the diverse restaurants, outstanding small businesses, and lively community, we are so honored to be a part of Mills 50. Not only do we love the location, but we truly made the Cameo building our home.
The Nickley Group moves into The Cameo
The Nickley Group team has been growing at an extremely fast rate, and we were bursting at the seams of our old office. Fortunately for us, our agent Chris Rey, was working with the owner ofSnap!, the most recent tenant at the Cameo when he decided to move locations. We couldn’t pass up this amazing opportunity.
The Nickley Group moved into the Cameo building in November of 2020. Tom always dreamed of having a space just for his team, clients, and community. When designing this office, he made sure it was a place our team wanted to be every day and clients wanted to visit. We added a pool table, beer taps, and a big mural by local artistRic Sosa. The team is always so giddy to show off our office to our clients and community members.
