The city was initially established in 1870 by Henry Sanford as a trading post along the St. Johns River. The idea to settle here was due to the strategic location on Lake Monroe and Chapman's Landing on Lake Harney. As trade increased, so did Sanford's population, becoming incorporated as a town in 1877 and eventually acquiring its official city status two years later.
